Ponting "The Pinnacle" McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017

This wine honours the most famous of all cricket battles, the Ashes. Ricky’s career against England was uncompromising, with no quarter asked or given of his opponents. From 35 tests played, he captained 18, scored eight centuries and 2,476 test runs.

Distinctive McLaren Vale characteristics shine through The Pinnacle. Sweet, soft, warm tannins whilst the palate is rich berry fruits, black pepper, nutmeg and cloves. A big, rich and complex Shiraz, with finesse, texture and elegance. This wine pays homage not only to McLaren Vale, but to the pinnacle of the cricketing world, the Ashes.

The story of the pinnacle

The Ashes is renowned as being one of the most prized trophys, not only in cricket but across the world of sport. With a deep history extending back to 1882, it's considered the pinnacle for any Australian cricketer to be involved in an Ashes series. Ricky played 168 tests and is no different. He always saw The Ashes as the pinnacle.

“Once you get a taste for it, you realise that it doesn’t get any better or bigger than playing Ashes cricket”.

Ricky regards the 2006-07 series as his fondest Ashes memory

“The hunger in the group was phenomenal and our performances just as dominant. The England team in that series was a very good team but they were blitzed by one of the greatest Test teams ever.”

Australia won that series in a 5-0 whitewash, the first since 1920-21.

"Choc-berry, mocha and peated wood scents. The palate is soft, lashed with sweet plum, cinnamon spice, a dash of espresso coffee and a bright, brisk, puckering-gummy finish. It’s a winter warmer with enough freshness on its side to get you through a summery barbecue. That, or the lunch break of a Test Match. Anyway, it’s a please many-comers style, plays McLaren Vale shiraz straight with good line and length. Casual drinking, good."

“I like the nose. McLaren Vale can be quite voluptuous and this one's not, it smells like it has been kept under control. It's still a big boy. Good structure. Plenty of tannins. There's a seaside-y, iodine character which gives it a nice savoury element too.”

STUART KNOX - GOOD FOOD August 2020

“Most appealing McLaren Vale shiraz with the dark chocolatey plumy fruit well to the fore. Nice tannin and oak combination. Could drink a bit of this.”

“Deep red colour with a tint of purple. The bouquet is pleasant if not clearly defined, the palate chewy and firm, with grip and density. Earth, chocolate and toast characters. A full-bodied wine with plenty of grunt and heft for the price.” TOP VALUE Recommendation.
